“I’m not a player I just crush a lot”

Big Pun

Last night, I went for dinner at one of my favorite Indian spots in the city, Royal Bangladesh. It’s down on 1st Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets and it has a dope tent out back if you’re in the mood to get a little sweaty, drink beer and eat cheap food… and I was. It also happens to be BYOB AND coincidentally enough the bodega right next door carries 400 different kinds of beer (heaven, I know). Sadly, none of these are my new personal favorite (which seems to be damn near impossible to find in NYC), Bohemia, but I digress.

Anyway, I happened to overhear the conversation at the next table. It went something like this:

“You know that song where Big Pun says, “I’m not a player I just f*ck a lot?” asks the healthy looking, caucasian female.

Her two dinner companions nod.

“Well that’s how I feel about writing. I’m not a writer. I just talk a lot. But I can’t possibly talk to enough people so I write it down so that people can read it.”

Now, my initial reaction was… that is quite possibly the best comparison using a Big Pun lyric that has ever been made, in history, ever. Then I thought about how I feel completely the opposite. I am a writer but I don’t do it nearly enough. So today, a few days from after my 25th birthday I am making a resolution to write… a lot, as much as Big Pun f*cked in fact. RIP.
