Got Her Toes Done Up and Her Fingernails Matchin’

Finally! Today, Chicago rapper Kid Sister dropped her highly anticipated (by me at least) video for “Pro Nails” featuring Kanye West. Though they didn’t break the piggy bank for this video (the budget was 3gs), they definitely made the best of it. I love the airbrushed acrylics and breaking dancing finger puppets. And let’s not for get that Kanye kills it. Ye rhymes, “Ayo this Maf*cker jammin’/ I’m on it it’s an anthem” and I totally have to agree. This joint makes me want to go get a manicure/pedicure stat.

Younity: A Female Art Collective

It’s funny how things happen. Yesterday in the office I got into yet another discussion/debate about female rappers. This time, it was about whether femcees have ever primarily marketed themselves and their music towards a female audience. I said yes, my coworkers said no. While Lil’ Kim (in her Hardcore days) and Foxy (back when she still had the Ill Na Na) did in fact empower and attract women that wanted to be sexy yet powerful, I had to admit that their target audience was male. Not being one to go down easily, I had to take it way back to Queen Latifiah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.” Bong! You can’t tell me “You gotta let em know/ you ain’t a b!tc# or a hoe,” wasn’t created as an anthem for the ladies.

Anyway, a few hours later I ended up stopping by the first exhibit of the aptly named female art collective, Younity. Younity was founded in New York City in 2007 by noted artist Alice Mizrachi and graffiti legend Toofly “to create an international collective of female artists, designers, photographers and craftswomen.” The show, “Crossover: Fusion of Female Stylez, Ideaz and Skillz” featured work by painters, street artists, photographers, graphic designers and fashion designers. It is available for viewing by appointment only through December 5th at the Showroom Gallery. I highly suggest you check it out. The work was simply amazing. I left inspired to dust off my paintbrushes and excited to get involved with Younity.

Youtubin’: Emily King and T-Pain

So, I’ve been up on YouTube since the beginning (I watched videos, religiously followed the genius that was LonelyGirl etc.) but I never got into uploading videos. About a month ago, on a whim, I uploaded some old digital camera footage I had of J Records artist Emily King performing at a bar downtown. Surprisingly, it has racked up over 1,400 views. While I understand that’s nothing in the scheme of things this took about 5 minutes of my time, max. I didn’t send one e-mail, embed it on any website or link to it anywhere. I figure I might as well keep it up. I have some great ideas that I’m going to be implementing for this site so… stay tuned.

Here’s the original EK video:
